Has Bangladesh recognized the right to continuous internet access .
The interim government has approved the draft of the 'Cyber Security Ordinance, 2024' by removing all controversial clauses from the 'Cyber Security Act' proposed by the Awami League government.
The ordinance formally recognizes the right of every citizen to receive continuous internet service.
This right to internet access is mentioned in section 2(b) of the ordinance.
Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia to grant this recognition. Faisal Taiyeb, the interim government's IT policy advisor, provided this information.
He stated that Bangladesh has recognized the right to continuous internet access for its citizens as the first country in South Asian history.
The right to continuous internet access for all citizens has been included in section 2(b) of the Cyber Security Ordinance.
Faisal Taiyeb noted that the Cyber Security Ordinance is very rich and forward-looking in its definitions.
It is also robust in terms of technology and technical aspects.
The law will provide adequate benefits to victims in terms of humanitarian and compensation issues.
It has also created obligations for informing the court regarding harassment issues, while giving judges sufficient space. He further mentioned that most clauses of the approved law are bailable.
Additionally, the penalties under the Digital Security Act have been reduced by half.
It is known that on Tuesday (December 24), the Advisory Council approved the draft of the 'Cyber Security Ordinance, 2024' in its 17th meeting. Later, at a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital, the Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam provided detailed information on the matter.
He said, "Rest assured, the new Cyber Security Ordinance will not only secure cyberspace but will also protect the freedom of our media."
